EVACUATION ORDER TERMINATED FOLLOWING ASSESSMENT OF DOW REICHHOLD PLANT STATUS

The evacuation order for the area within a 1,500-foot radius of the Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex Plant located at 144 Fork Branch Road in north Dover has been terminated. Those who evacuated the area may return to their homes. Businesses that closed as a result of a styrene leak at the plant may reopen immediately, and any area school classes or church services may be conducted as scheduled on Sunday, August 27.

Monitoring and assessment of the styrene leak from a railroad tanker car at the plant site provided information that allowed public safety officials and hazardous materials experts to determine that there are no current health hazards to the public. Delaware Natural Resources and Environmental Control Emergency Response Team monitoring equipment and equipment provided by HMHTTC Response Incorporated showed no readings of styrene in the air at the plant and in the area surrounding the plant.

DNREC Emergency Response Team and HMHTTC will continue to monitor air quality at the rail road car and the plant through the night and at least through Sunday morning.

Area residents who have health concerns and questions may call 302-213-6655; toll free, to speak with a nurse and/or a toxicologist. The number is activated Saturday evening, August 26, 9 p.m. - midnight, and Sunday, August 27, 7 a.m. – 12 midnight.
