Governor Ruth Ann Minner has announced that Delaware state government offices will open at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 24, as a result of snow and ice conditions.
Sussex County government offices are also scheduled to open at 10 a.m. School districts in Sussex County have announced that they will not open tomorrow.
In Sussex County, many roads and most parking lots and sidewalks remain caked with hard-packed layers of ice and snow. The build-up of ice and crusted snow is too hard to plow on roadways and parking lot surfaces or to shovel from walkways.
Even though most primary roads and many secondary roads are cleared throughout the state, blowing snow in open areas is causing significant drifts to build up on roads there were cleared earlier. DelDOT officials said that crews will be out in predawn hours when winds are predicted to slacken in order to work on clearing areas of drifts.
Governor Minner said the late opening of state government offices will stagger the early morning traffic and allow DelDOT some extra time to work on problem areas. She praised the work DelDOT performed as they worked through the weekend clearing and treating roads.
Officials of emergency management agencies, Delaware State Police and DelDOT urge all motorists who must drive tomorrow morning to continue to use caution. As they reopen after weekend snow closures, business owners and those returning to work are asked to make safety their priority, especially as they drive.
