School Safety Physical Assessment Program

The Delaware School Safety Center offers no-cost physical safety assessments for all public and charter schools across the state. These assessments are a proactive and collaborative way to enhance school safety by identifying strengths and potential vulnerabilities in a school’s physical environment.

Purpose of a Physical Assessment

The goal of a physical safety assessment is to support schools in creating a safer, more secure learning environment for students and staff. Assessments focus on how the physical layout, infrastructure, and daily operations can impact safety, emergency preparedness, and overall risk reduction.

Our Assessment Process

Our experienced school safety assessors conduct thorough, on-site evaluations using a standardized, evidence-based framework. The process includes:

  • A full walkthrough of the campus (interior and exterior)
  • Reviews of arrival/dismissal procedures, visitor management, and access control
  • Interviews or consultations with key school personnel
  • A detailed written report highlighting observations, strengths, and actionable recommendations

Each assessment is conducted with a focus on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles—evaluating natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement, and maintenance to determine how physical and environmental factors can deter unsafe behaviors.

Our Commitment

All assessments are conducted free of charge for Delaware schools. Our team is committed to supporting school communities in strengthening physical security while preserving an open, welcoming atmosphere for learning.
